  2. Can a Hidden Dog Fence Work for Multiple Dogs?

September 24, 2026 | Categories: FAQ / General Info, Tips

If you have two or more dogs, you probably already know that no two dogs are exactly alike. One may stay close to the house while another wants to explore every corner of the yard. One may be small and cautious, while another is bigger, more energetic, or simply more curious. Questions we hear often from families with multiple dogs include:

Can one hidden dog fence really work for all of them?

Yes. A DogWatch® Hidden Fence can be used with multiple dogs on the same property. The dogs share the same boundary, but each wears their own receiver collar, which can be set up for that individual dog. That flexibility is especially useful when the dogs are different sizes, ages, or personalities.

How does one Hidden Fence work for multiple dogs?

The underground boundary is installed around the part of the property where you want your dogs to have freedom to play and explore. Each dog then wears their own DogWatch receiver collar. You don’t need a separate underground fence for every dog – the same boundary can work for two dogs, three dogs, or more. What can differ from dog to dog is the receiver setting and the way each dog is trained to understand the boundary.

Does each dog need their own collar?

Yes. Each dog needs their own receiver collar. That allows the system to be adjusted based on the individual dog rather than treating every dog in the household exactly the same. A small dog may need a different setting than a large dog. A sensitive dog may respond differently than a dog that is more confident or independent. That flexibility is especially useful in homes where the dogs are very different from one another.

Can dogs of different sizes use the same Hidden Fence?

Absolutely. You may have a small terrier and a large retriever. Or an older dog that has always stayed close to home and a younger dog that wants to investigate everything. They can still use the same hidden fence boundary. Because each dog has their own receiver collar, the settings can be chosen for that particular dog. The goal is not to make every dog respond in exactly the same way. It is to help each one understand and respect the same yard boundary.

Why each dog needs individual training

Even if your dogs do everything together, boundary training is one time when it is usually better to work with them separately. One dog may pick up the idea quickly. Another may need more repetition. Training them one at a time makes it easier for each dog to focus on the boundary flags, the warning signal, and your guidance. It also gives you a chance to see how each dog is responding instead of assuming they will learn at the same pace. Once they understand the boundary individually, they can enjoy the yard together.

What if you add another dog later?

Maybe you had one dog when your DogWatch system was installed and have since added another. That does not mean you need to replace the entire system. In many cases, an additional compatible receiver collar can be added for the new dog. The new dog will still need to learn the boundary, even if the other dogs already know it well. Dogs do learn from one another, but when it comes to a hidden fence, it is important that each dog understands the boundary for themselves.

Do multiple dogs change the cost of a Hidden Fence?

The main boundary system is shared, but each dog needs their own receiver collar. So the number of dogs can affect the total price of the system. Other factors matter too, including the size and shape of the property, the type of installation, driveway crossings, and whether you want to create any additional protected areas. The best way to know what your property needs is to have a local DogWatch dealer look at the yard and talk with you about your dogs.

Is a Hidden Fence a Good Fit for Your Dogs?

For many multi-dog households, a hidden fence is a simple way to give everyone more freedom outside without dividing the property into separate areas. The dogs share the same yard and the same boundary, but each dog can still have the collar settings and training that make sense for them. If you have two dogs, three dogs, or a growing four-legged family, DogWatch by Hudson Valley Boundaries can help you figure out the right setup for your property. We install and service DogWatch Hidden Fence systems throughout the Hudson Valley, New York area.
